I have eaten at this establishment a few times. LuLu’s sits between a Deli / Coffee house and a Burger joint and a few small retail business just off Sand Hill Road. I was going to dad’s but wanted to eat first so I stopped in on a nice sunny weekday for a late lunch.
It was on a slow Taco Tuesday that I got the notion to venture out and get some nachos. Yes, I know, it’s “taco” Tuesday not nacho Tuesday but that’s how the Nacho Hunter does it. In the end, this is a must try nacho joint if you are in the bay area.
The base for a plate of nachos is the chip; it is the single most important component followed by cheese and meat. The other component is what kind of experience you can have when getting your nachos. All that said, the leadup experience to my nachos today was better than the end result.
This is a neighbourhood taqueria that serves up some amazing burritos and pretty good nachos too. Due to my schedule I had limited time for nachos but as it is NND I had to stop in where I could. Note this today's experience was not as good as those in the past. About 6mos ago I had much better, but we don't really could the best time, it's the time you go to review.
As you can guess, eating your way through the Mission in San Francisco be it nachos, burritos or any of the new fancy restaurants can be a lifetime quest. I am starting with a place I know and will continue the hunt as long as I can. This week's selection was solid, not a top ranking one but the bar is high. Would I go back, yes I would and make sure I ask for extra chips and no carrots. Special shout out to nachonomics, you can check them out here www.nachonomics.com you will see me sporting their tee shirt.
Old habits are hard to break; so who the fuck wants to mess with that!!!!! I have been to El Metate more times than I can count. It was just around the corner from work for eight years. So when I was striking out all over town (Hunting for Nachos) I just pulled in and got a solid plate from a reliable source...........
Took the day off for my birthday and could not find one person to hang out with so what do I do? GET NACHOS :) Feeling a bit lazy I was just driving around town till I came across a joint that I frequently get burritos from; so I think nachos, right? Please don't mind the enthusiasm and the bad shave today. SERVICE: Not much to say here as this is a local taqueria. A pleasant smile and quickly dropping food off on the table so a less than average score. AMBIENCE: They pick up a few extra points for the decor and the clientele that frequent the place, this all pushes the score up over average. Any time you can feel excited about being someplace, the activity or the food just is that much better. ....and it was my birthday :) VALUE: Very Good pricing, considering the area. Many people do not realize that the surrounding burbs of SF can be and are often more expensive. At $7.95 this is well below what would be expected for the portion and the quality. They could get $1.50 more if they wanted, but I hope they don't. APPEARANCE: I nice plate and it was layered but there was not enough to put them into OMG territory. And nothing about the appearance would put you off (e.g. liquid puddles). TASTE: As I ALWAYS say go hungry to get your nachos, and I was. For me taste is helped by everything else, you are in a good mood, you're hungry, the food looks good, and it actually does taste great. Today it was almost a seven, but as we don't have half marks on the scoring I went one lower. I wanted to give them a seven but kept thinking that it was all these other factors and I was not looking at pure taste. Was that wrong of me? Should I go ahead and give in to all the emotions????? Ok, so it was a nice sunny day I knew that Sancho's had really good tacos from previous visits, so I figured the nachos would be just as good. The tricky thing about nachos is that what looks like a great at first can go bad very fast. Note that i gave some nice average marks for this review. The taste was good, the settings was ok, they looked good at first, but they just forgot the number one rule in nachos; IT'S ALL ABOUT THE CHIPS!!!! Your chips must be crunchy and be able to hold up for at least the majority of the meal. There should never be a pool of liquid at the bottom of the plate. I may go back one day and give these guys a second chance but with so many other choices in that area it could be a few months. If any Hunters have a better experience there please do a second review or make a comment below.
My buddy David H tipped me off to this place. David said these were solid and worth the drive to SJ. Well David, I got news for you brotha. I think you need to raise the bar just a tad more. Don't get me wrong, these were some good nachos, but they did not measure up to the expectation. So let's get to it; how good were they? Iguanas was just a bit better than average for a joint that mostly does takeout for the working crowd and college students. They were priced to target that audience yet I feel they could have offered a bit larger portion to make the value better. Nothing that special about how they looked either lacking the color of salsa or red onion etc... The one bonus is the location, some good parking options and outdoor seating under some shade trees make your nacho eating experience a pleasure. Service was better than expected. With the many options, the cashier was more than glad to give a run down and make a few suggestions. The double cheese was one and I wish I had taken that option. I was also able to check out the restroom and can report it was very clean. If you were in the area for a meeting, or FANIME or taking a class at city collage then this joint is within walking distance and would be a good bet, even with the large variety of competition for your dollars. David.... next time I'm taking you for some serious nachos, just so you know where I'm coming from :) .
