7 Insanely Huge Nachos

There are those days when your brain says, MORE IS BETTER, and it's right!!!  However when presented with the following, maybe you better bring backup. The only item on this list that The Nacho Hunter has attacked, is the Margheritavill's platter in Las Vegas.  ... and YES I did eat all of it.  Anyone out there who has attempted the others please submit a full review.

Cafe Anasia - Honolulu, HI

Cafe Anasia did not disappoint. I was skeptical at first when we walked up and the battered, old sign also said "Vietnamese Cuisine." I've never been to a Vietnamese place that made nachos. When we walked in, the layout was pleasing and comfy. Autumn had scored us a large table in the middle of the room. There were dart boards, pool tables, and that basketball game. The place looks fun! Our waitress, Amber, immediately greeted us and promptly brought cocktails out. The gang played some darts, waiting for the lollygaggers to arrive. I loved the long booth table that all 11 of us managed to squish into. They offered two kinds of nachos, one with chili and one with kalua pork. Everyone went for kalua pork, except for me and Traci who got one of each. When they came out, they were gorgeous with sour cream and dynamite sauce drizzled in eye pleasing patterns over the pile of cheesy nachoness. A few minutes into the devouring, Amber and the bartender (Jessie) brought out a round of shots on the house to thank us for coming in. They also brought a plate of salt and pepper pork chops to try. Everything was delicious! The dynamite sauce made every bite a semi-spicy, semi-sweet party in my mouth. 9 times out of 10, kalua pork wins for my favorite meat topping on nachos. This was not one of those times. Something magical happens when the chili and dynamite sauce mix together that does not exist on the kalua pork nachos. If you don't believe me, you'll just have to go and order one of each to try for yourself. I'll definitely be back to Cafe Anasia to try more of the delicious food they offer on the menu. The prices are reasonable, the staff is incredible, the food is tasty, and the ambiance is fun. Parking is limited, but I just walk or ride the bus so no worries there.

Salsalito Taco Shop

So after subjecting one to several cross legged hours afloat on San Francisco Bay, my owner’s ordered up Steak Nachos at Salsalito Taco Shop in Sausalito, then drove over to collect. From what I could sense of the place from the back seat of my humanoid’s chariot, it looks like a cool kennel – a colorful blend of rustic charm and Baja influenced odors wafting my way on the evening breeze. At twenty four dollars plus tax (that’d keep my bowl topped up with kibble for a whole week), these things better be good. Got to admit, these things are dam tasty – good thick layer of hearty cheese, beans and steak layered Nachos, topped off with freshly made salsa and a huge dollop of guacamole. Presentation’s about as good as your going to get from the innards of a take-out tray, and being ravenously hungry, my humanoids didn’t seem to unduly concerned – only pausing occasionally to moan about their expanding bellies. The miserly sampling of the grass fed steak that made its way into my bowl didn’t stay there for long either – give me a bigger ration next time dudes!

St James Gate - Rock and Roll Nachos!

Media

This is a regular place for me as it was close to my work. for over 10 years I have eaten here probably 20+ times and had the nachos 7-8 of them. You will see I was surprised at the portion but as it turns out they sized it for one, not the standard platter for 3-4. Price however was the same so that effected the value in my score. The standout for St Hames is the venue, it is just a great place to eat, even when it's packed with people dancing to Salsa on a Sunday evening. There is enough room outside for a group to hand out and drink beer with their nachos. Speaking of beer, there are plenty of options both on tap and in the bottle at St James. On to the nachos: The chips are solid and stood up well, not exceptional but good enough to last. The chicken was good but I have had moister in the past; and the toppings are as expected. In the past I have been given the FULL platter when ordering for one and toppings were already on, having everything on the side is ok but not what I like. Please don't pass this place up if you are in the area. It's worth the ping pong, two large bars and the perpetual sunshine we get here on the peninsula.

Eating nachos Like a Total PIG!!!

Media

Took the day off for my birthday and could not find one person to hang out with so what do I do? GET NACHOS :) Feeling a bit lazy I was just driving around town till I came across a joint that I frequently get burritos from; so I think nachos, right? Please don't mind the enthusiasm and the bad shave today. SERVICE: Not much to say here as this is a local taqueria. A pleasant smile and quickly dropping food off on the table so a less than average score. AMBIENCE: They pick up a few extra points for the decor and the clientele that frequent the place, this all pushes the score up over average. Any time you can feel excited about being someplace, the activity or the food just is that much better. ....and it was my birthday :) VALUE: Very Good pricing, considering the area. Many people do not realize that the surrounding burbs of SF can be and are often more expensive. At $7.95 this is well below what would be expected for the portion and the quality. They could get $1.50 more if they wanted, but I hope they don't. APPEARANCE: I nice plate and it was layered but there was not enough to put them into OMG territory. And nothing about the appearance would put you off (e.g. liquid puddles). TASTE: As I ALWAYS say go hungry to get your nachos, and I was. For me taste is helped by everything else, you are in a good mood, you're hungry, the food looks good, and it actually does taste great. Today it was almost a seven, but as we don't have half marks on the scoring I went one lower. I wanted to give them a seven but kept thinking that it was all these other factors and I was not looking at pure taste. Was that wrong of me? Should I go ahead and give in to all the emotions?????
